LOST LANDS - LED TREES
TYPE: Live Production, Festival Art Installation
SCOPE: 187 real trees, pixel-mapped LED, unified MADRIX, primary vendor
DMX UNIVERSES: Approximately 1,500
BUILD: 10 days, team of 4 leads
SHOW OPERATION: 4 days
THE CHALLENGE
Lost Lands is an outdoor festival built around a specific environmental identity — a prehistoric, forested world. The LED environment had to serve that identity rather than override it. The brief wasn't to light a forest. It was to make 187 real trees feel like one living, breathing organism responding to the music.
At nearly 1,500 DMX universes running simultaneously across 187 individual trees, this is one of the most technically complex single LED systems ESP has ever deployed. Every tree had to be individually addressable and unified into a single MADRIX-controlled system that could run complex effects across the entire forest as one surface.
WHAT WE BUILT
187 TREES — 5M LED STRIPS
187 real trees wrapped with 5-meter pixel-mapped LED strips. Each tree is individually addressable. The full installation covers the festival terrain — not a single structure but an entire outdoor environment transformed into a programmable LED system.
~1,500 DMX UNIVERSES — UNIFIED MADRIX SYSTEM
Nearly 1,500 DMX universes running through MADRIX as a single unified system. Effects move across all 187 trees simultaneously — color, movement, and pattern programmed to respond to the music and the mood of the stage.
EXECUTION
A team of four leads managed the full installation over 10 days. Wrapping 187 trees with LED strip is a physical undertaking at this scale — every tree stripped, wrapped, and connected to the power and data infrastructure running across the outdoor terrain. Universe configuration and MADRIX programming ran concurrently with the physical installation so the system was ready to test as each section of the forest came online.
Show operation ran across four festival days with ESP operating the full system live. Real-time programming adjustments, system monitoring, and show execution for the duration of the event.
Strike ran two days. 187 trees unwrapped, all power and data infrastructure pulled, and the full system cleared from the site. A 10-day build comes down in two.
THE RESULT
The Lost Lands forest installation is one of the most photographed festival environments in the country. The effect of 187 real trees running as one unified LED system — each one individually addressable, all of them responding together — creates an experience that isn't replicable by any other means. It requires the full combination of large-scale MADRIX expertise, installation logistics capability, and the patience to execute a 10-day build with a four-person team.
